COLD THERAPY (Cryotherapy) - When injury occurs, blood rushes to the site of the wound in an effort to deliver much-needed nutrients and oxygen to begin the healing process. With that rush, there is an expansion of the blood vessels, which is called 'Vasodilatation', which increases the blood-flow and causes the injury to swell-up and inflame. Cold therapy or Cryotherapy is most effective when applied immediately after receiving the injury or on the onset of pain.
Essentially, Cryotherapy works in two ways:
- It slows down the cell metabolism and contracts the blood vessels. This process is called 'Vasoconstriction'.
- As a result of the contraction of blood vessels, the bleeding is controlled and the swelling and the pain decrease.
Cryotherapy can be used along with compression and elevation of the affected body area for better effects immediately after workouts or in case of minor injury.
HEAT THERAPY (Thermotherapy) - Heating increases the temperature of the tissues and blood vessels beneath the surface of the skin. This causes blood vessels to open up and increase in size, a process known as 'Vasodilatation'. This in turn promotes blood flow and circulation, delivering more nutrients and oxygen to the affected area for faster healing. When tissues and muscles are heated up, they loosen and become more elastic as the collagen or the main structural protein in the tissues becomes more and more flexible with heating. That is why Heat Therapy or Thermotherapy can heal cramps and muscle spasms.
Application of heat therapy gives benefits by
- Improving circulation and reducing pain
- Relaxing tight muscles and tissues and easing cramps
- Increasing flexibility for a greater range of motions
Heat Therapy is often used in sports injury to deliver nutrients and oxygen to the affected area for faster and more effective healing.
Cryotherapy and Thermotherapy are most effective when applied together in alternating cycles of five-minute duration.
